Adding and managing your cars
Pick your exact car, keep more than one, and let trevl learn how you drive it.
4 minute read
Every plan trevl makes starts from your car: its usable battery, its weight and shape, the plugs it takes and how fast it will accept charge at each state of charge. That is why the first thing we ask for is the car, and why it is worth choosing the exact model.
Adding a car
Open My Vehicles
On a new account the dashboard asks for your car straight away. Afterwards, go to Account and choose Add a Vehicle under My Vehicles.
Search by make and model
Type the make, the model, or both, and search. The catalogue covers well over a hundred electric cars sold in the UK since 2014.
Choose your exact model
Most models come in several versions. Pick the one that matches your car’s year and battery: a Long Range and a Standard Range of the same car get genuinely different plans. If yours is not listed, choose the closest battery size, which matters more than anything else, and tell us through Help & feedback so we can add it.
Give it a name
A nickname is how the car appears in the planner and in Charge Now. Anything you like: “The Leaf”, or your number plate.
More than one car
Add each car you drive and pick the right one when you plan. Free accounts can hold three cars, Premium five, and Pro as many as you like. Remove a car from Account with the bin icon on its card; its past journeys go with it.
Adjusting a car
Tap Edit on a car under Account to change:
- Its nickname.
- Typical load: passengers and luggage beyond the driver, about 75 kg a person. Weight costs range on hills and around town, so a car that usually carries the family should say so.
- Arrive with at least: the arrival charge the planner starts from for this car. You can still change it for any one journey.
- Calibration: if the car has one, you can reset it and let trevl learn again, for example after changing tyres or handing the car to another driver.
What we assume about your car
- Battery ageing. Batteries lose capacity over the years, so we assume about 2.5% less usable battery for each year since the model year, never below half. A 2020 car is planned in 2026 as having about 85% of its original battery. It is an average: some batteries fare better, some worse, and calibration corrects for the difference.
- Arriving with enough. Every plan aims to get you to the destination with at least the arrival charge you set on the planner. It starts from the car’s own setting, 15% unless you change it.
- Plugs. We only send you to chargers with a connector your car takes.
Calibration: plans that learn how you drive
Two cars of the same model are not identical, and neither are their drivers. When you tap End on a journey, trevl asks what your car shows and compares it with the charge the plan predicted. If you used noticeably more or less energy than predicted, it offers to save a calibration for that car, and future plans are adjusted to match, including where your charging stops go. Each saved calibration builds on the one before, so the figure settles over a few journeys rather than jumping about.
Within about 5% either way, it tells you the prediction was spot on and there is nothing to save.
Getting a good calibration
The comparison is only as good as the final reading. When you end a journey, give the figure from the car’s display, or connect an OBD-II adapter on Pro. If you end without a reading, the journey is saved but not used for calibration: trevl would only be comparing its prediction against its own estimate. If trevl re-plans on the way, it compares with the latest plan, the arrival it showed you last. A journey that uses less than a tenth of the battery after its last re-plan is too short to measure, so it offers no calibration. See on the road.
Journey history
Each car on the Account page has a Journey History button. It lists your completed journeys with distance, time and how your arrival charge compared with the plan. Open one to see a chart of the planned charge against every reading you gave along the way, with your charging stops marked.
