Finding a charger with Charge Now
Where can I charge, here, soon? Filters, sorting, and what each charger card tells you.
4 minute read
Charge Now answers a different question from journey planning: not “where should I stop on the way to Leeds” but “where can I charge, here, soon”. Useful when plans change, when you are somewhere unfamiliar, or when you just want a top-up while you do the shopping.
Where it looks
Charge Now opens at your home location if you have saved one in Account, and otherwise asks your browser where you are. If location is blocked or you want to look somewhere else, type a postcode into the search box.
Narrowing it down
| Filter | What it does |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | Pick your car and the Type and Power filters are limited to what it can use. A car with only one connector type is filtered to it automatically. |
| Radius | 5, 10, 25 or 50 km around the search point. 10 km to start with. |
| Type | Show only CCS, CHAdeMO or Type 2 connectors. |
| Power | Hide chargers below a minimum power. |
| Sort | Reliability (the default), Distance or Price. |
Reliability puts chargers someone can vouch for first, then orders by their reliability score and distance. Price puts chargers without a published price at the end rather than pretending they are free.
Reading a charger card
Results appear as cards beside the map, or below it on a phone. Tap a card to find it on the map; tap a marker to find its card. Each card shows:
- A badge: Live when the operator publishes its status to us, Checked when the site was confirmed recently but its availability is not live, or Unverified for community data nobody has confirmed lately, with when the record was last confirmed underneath.
- The reliability score, 0 to 100, labelled Reliable (75 and over), Mixed (50 to 74) or Unreliable (under 50). A site with nothing to score it on shows no score, and asks Was it working? instead: tap Yes or No if you have been there.
- The distance, address, top power and price per kWh.
- Each connector, with its type, power and status, and when that status was last checked. On a computer, hover over a connector for exact times.
See reading charger status for what the badges, colours and scores mean in detail.
Things you can do from a card
| Action | What you get |
|---|---|
| Simulate charge | Pick one of your cars and a start and finish charge, and see how long it would take on this charger, how much energy you would add and what it would cost, with a chart of the charging curve. |
| Connector by day | A 30-day strip for each connector: working, not working, or not checked, day by day. |
| Site by hour | A chosen day, hour by hour: how much of the site was free, in use or out of service. Up to a month back. |
| Star | Save it as a favourite and get alerts about it. |
| Report | Tell us whether it worked when you used it, with a comment if you like. Reports feed its reliability score. One report per charger a day. |
| Directions | From the marker on the map, open the charger in your usual maps app. |
Without an account
Charge Now is open to anyone at trevl.co.uk/charge, no account needed. You get the same map, the same live status and the same reliability scores, within 10 km of where you are. The wider radiuses, saving favourites, both history panels, charging simulations and reports need an account; they show a padlock, and tapping one explains what it does and how to join the waiting list.
Favourites and alerts
Starring a charger adds it to My Chargers on your dashboard, and trevl tells you when it goes out of service, comes back or changes price. See favourite chargers and alerts.
Free Pro, for the first 500
